can you guess what it is yet

Look what arrived in the post today....however, as a certain person (trio) pointed out to me there's not been much mention of running of late and as I don't yet have everything to build it up, it's going to stay were it is for a few more days.

I was hoping to get to the lakes tomorrow for a big day out along the route but after looking at weather forecasts I'm having second thoughts. It's a long way to go to get lost and come home again. Maybe I could go to Derbyshire instead...whatever happens it's going to involve trainers and no wheels.

ps....if anyone comes across some pace carbon forks let me know!

nearly light night ride

Yesterdays (proper) ride was a real mix of contrasting terrain. Bluebell carpeted woods and tacky bridleways gave way to an urban assault of broken glass and dumped rubbish. The pace was fast, as usual. I still struggled to keep up on the off road but am making slight progress when we hit tarmac. One day, one day...

Plans are being made for next weeks ride. Lights and bivvy bag essential. Can't wait. Best thing about last nights outing was my helmet hair...

4/12 century a month challenge (metric)

I knew I was going to struggle this month with finding enough time to get out for a decent ride. I had plans of completing a century when in Wales but after a much shorter ride realised that the hills where a lot bigger and I'd need a LOT more time!

I'm embarrassed to admit this but yesterday after work I completed my century on the exercise bike with a great deal of help from the bbc iplayer. Programmes watched were: The Thick of It, HIGNFY, Gavin and Stacey and a bit of Julia Bradbury!

I'm never doing this again...

a little bit poorer

after some online banking issues due to barclays thinking my card had been stolen i have finally managed to purchase my new frame. and no, i didn't go for the pink!

thank you chris, simon and redbikes for keeping me updated regarding the sale! ...and for the hub too simon!

i love holidays, me

Is it really April? A whole week in north Wales with no rain and sun tan lines.

In no particular order.....
a fell race
a couple of bike rides
several walks
2 pre-breakfast summits
some hilly runs
an obscene amount of cake

Thanks to the OP's for great company and excellent food. Looking forward to next years Gout Club-on tour!

...also squeezed in an interview back in Nottingham. Unsuccessful but at least I got some positive feed back this time.

i hate all clothes

Spent a tortuous few hours in town trying to purchase 'smart' clothes due to an impending interview. I absolutely hate clothes shopping. Where do people buy their work clothes from? Everything I saw today was horrible. Why would you want to wear a stretchy shirt with puffy shoulders?

After the jumble sale of TK Max I went to h&m which was just as bad. I found myself wondering aimlessly around Marks picking up outfits that my nan wouldn't even wear. I even went to Monsoon. I have never been there before and will never go back. Maybe I should have worn 'proper' shoes, as my battered inov-8's didn't do me any favours. I need some kind of make-over but without the public humiliation!

Off to north Wales tomorrow for a weeks holiday with Jane's family. Should be able to get some decent runs and a bit of biking in. Might even race on Saturday and test if my new diet of chocolate has improved my fitness!

at last

Thanks to a new and improved rota starting next week, I've finally finished my last 10 day stretch at the workhouse. I really struggle to keep motivated during these longer stints but no more excuses. Probably should have run more this week, especially after yesterdays boozy slippery slope that culminated in a lot of french stick, tortilla and The Big Lebowski.

A weekend of traveling around the country visiting relatives and over indulging will hopefully see me eager to pound the pavement next week.

testing night ride

For a while now I've been debating with myself about whether to 'up-grade' Blackie or save up and get a whole new bike. Of course I could just carry on and do nothing but I've been having a strange, 'it's not you, it's me' relationship with Blackie over the past few months.

I haven't ridden my geared bike since making the conversion to single speed. In fact the Kona is still in bits since I took it apart for Strathpuffer. I've been enjoying a kind of bike riding renaissance with Blackie. Not since tearing around on my first BMX have I had such pure, unadulterated pleasure from pedaling.

However, I've also found that I've become more fearful and nervous as a rider. This could be due to a lot things-getting older being the obvious, but it's also coincided with riding the retro single speed. The extreme, stretched out racing position combined with rigid forks and brakes that just about slow me down, has left me walking sections that I would have previously had a go at. Again, maybe I just need more practice but this is the essence of my dilemma.

An 'up-grade' would mean a switch to disc brakes and carbon forks. But that's not going to change the geometry of the frame and it'll still won't have sliding drop outs. Some how it seems wrong to try and change that bike so much and at the moment with a pair of slicks it would make the perfect commuter.

So, to come to my conclusion...it's going to be a new frame. Something that fits me perfectly and will enable me to build up the ultimate single speed machine.

Choices, choices;
Orange-probally too expensive and difficult to get a test ride.
Cotic-again pretty expensive but very tempting.
On-One Inbred-excellent value for money
On-One Scandal-I'm strangely drawn to this....

Luckily Chris has an encyclopedic knowledge of all things bike and has steered me towards the obvious choices. And patiently explained the difference in materials and geometry. Even more importantly his wife has an 16 inch Inbred.

On to the the test ride, off we rode with his and her inbreds around the bridleways of Nottinghamshire. This sizing was spot on and with some adjustments to the bar height I felt much more stable and in control. It was so reassuring to be able to come to a stop with the strength of one finger. Compared to to Blackie the front end felt much heavier and stiffer but the trails were especially dry last night. And of course, on my dream machine I'll be adding carbon forks!

The inbred has the same geometry as the scandal but is heavier. So, I could either loose some weight or get the lighter bike and carry more cake. I think you know the answer! It took all of my will power not to put in an order for a new frame when I got home, that will have to wait 'til next pay day.

Thanks Chris and Sylvia!

work. rest. work. cycle. cake.
running to resume tomorrow.

maybe it's still possible

I've decided to take the gratefully received advice people have kindly left following recent posts. More speed work, better recovery and patience will be my mantra from now on. This is officially a week off 'proper' training, an emphasis on fun.

25 miles of post work DAYLIGHT riding, following yesterday afternoons running about the woods with Jane. bgr is still on...

march in numbers

It's been a strange old month. Book ended by 2 races both of which have left me with mixed feelings. The Wye race spurred me on where as the Skyline, the race I'd actually been looking forward to, has left me with nothing but questions and doubts.

Looking back though I've significantly improved on February, the less said about that the better! The things I need to work on are speed and core, and I should probably cut down slightly on the sugary treats. I'll let the numbers speak for themselves and put this funny mood down to being a bit pre-menstrual!!

151.53 miles run
62% Off road
34,636ft of ascent
236.36 miles ridden, with 23,449ft of climbing
1 metric (EPIC) century. An ace adventure
1 rim destroyed
0 applications completed but I do have an interview date in April
1 rejection letter
1 interview not attended after I asked some probing questions about the shift pattern!
2 bgr legs recce'd
1 toe nail about to fall off
Numerous supportive comments from other bloggers-thank you.

Cake of the month: a tough one this month, with many strong contenders. But there can only be one winner...Jane's never ending apple crumble
