3 days in the lakes

at first it felt all wrong. heavy bags, bursting with insulating layers, spikes and an axe. clomping along in stiff unforgiving boots, fingers rendered useless in over sized gloves. there was no snow in the valley, not even a covering of frost. feeling totally over equipped we made slow progress. we were hoping for snow and ice and all we saw were muddy, grassy paths. oh well, we'll going running tomorrow.

but then, almost exactly on the 600m contour it came. a thick glassy neve, impassable without magic boots. is there a sound more pleasing than steel points puncturing cold, hard ice? another few contour lines gained and another layer put on. feeling justified at last.

fairfield was our first fell top lunch of the year. too cold to linger but well worth carrying a flask of hot ribena. gaining confidence in our new toys and eager for more, we agreed that there'd be no running as long as the cold conditions remained.

day two promised to be even better with temperatures dropping below freezing in the valleys and possibility of snow flurries. wanting the most time on spikes we sought out an easy route with maximum crunchy plateau, helvellyn. still learning and enjoying the new techniques of winter walking we didn't want anything too 'extreme' and ascended from thirlmere...not just yet anyway...

the barren, wind scoured summit plateau was lunch stop number two. from here we headed towards dollywaggon and were treated to a mini whiteout. things started to feel very wintery all of a sudden and it was bloody brilliant! descending dollywaggon via the bgr route which, when covered in hard snow is steep enough to be interesting. we then came across another walker 'crag-fast' on the slope. facing inwards, he was trying to kick his toes into the snow, whilst punching in his hands in too. without crampons he was making painfully slow progress and looked more than a little precarious. offering him my axe and we gave him the briefest of lessons in glascading. his progress now faster and somewhat safer!

tea and grasmere gingerbread was soon followed by ale and crisps. feet up and warming by the open fire. i could certainly get used to this. the alpine looking blencathra was calling on day three. still being cautious we opted for hall's fell ridge. not as exposed as sharpe edge but more than enough excitement for winter beginners.

and 'saddleback' didn't disappoint. standing alone in the valley, with its jagged ridges dusted with snow it seems much higher than its 868 meters. my sense of nervous excitement grew the higher we got. a thin layer of snow now covered the icy path, cautiously we move on. zig-zaging over the ridge, not quite brave enough to remain on the crest, next time. next time. the final 100 meters were covered in deep snow. with the ridge now broad enough to confidently stand on and the cloudless deep blue sky a more perfect ascent could not be had.

we're already planning for next winter but maybe there's time for one last taste of snow and ice before we put the new toys away.

wk10 'the plan' round up

ticked off the two planned runs. nothing amazing but fat leg is well on the mend and barely noticeable. some longer runs next week and then back to 'proper' training.

socks pulled up

after reading swiss's insightful comments to my last post, i had a bit of a talking to myself- after finishing my second peanut butter and orange biscuit, freshly bake yesterday. in fact, due to all the supportive comments i've had since ol' fat leg turned up, i realised that i've just got to get on with things.

tea and biscuits finished and off to town for some retail therapy, gaiters for forth coming trip. for some reason i don't mind running with cold wet legs but walking like that just seems uncivilized. back home and trainers on. made sure the run wasn't too 'easy'. tasted metal and sweat stung my eyes. but feeling a lot better than i did 12 hours ago.

thanks for all the good advice and support over the past few week fellow blogites. i promise to be less whingy and repetitive....for a few days at least.

wk9 'the plan' round up

honestly, it's not going well. i could use the 'just going back to work and it's bloody tiring', or 'been busy with forms', or 'fat leg still a bit iffy' or, well the list could go on. all a load of bollox.

we're off to the lakes in a few days. i'm hoping a change of scenery and some big hills will remind me why pounding the pavements is a means to an end.

i hate forms

it's taken a supreme level of displacement activity but i have finally submitted my ucas form. in the process i've also achieved a spotlessly clean house, a re-organized bathroom cabinet, homemade carrot and coriander soup, 13 freshly baked rolls, 3/4 of yet another trashy crime/forensic story, some running, a lot of stretching and several photos of me doing said tasks.

as jane pointed out last night, if i do get accepted onto the course then there's going to be another 3 years of this. she doesn't think she can cope.

thanks for all the help amy, ali, vikki and mike, really, really appreciated.....and of course jane....

wk8 'the plan' round up

first run of the year! calf and shin still tight and a little achy. which is good in some ways as it's a reminder not to rush back. still elevating and ice'ing and taking the advice of only building up by 10min intervals for at least another week.

despite this i wasted another weekend by wearing my hangover hat again. i'm certainly carrying a few extra pounds and feeling like i'm starting from the beginning again. so, a grand total of 2.5 miles for the year and 21 weeks before the main event.

whooooooooooooooooooooooooop

in my parallel life we'd be near inverness now and i'd be feeling the sick excitement that comes before any race...in reality we're here in the gloomy, slushy east midlands. BUT, this evening i slipped my feet into my trainers and went for a run.

joined by jane who ensured a slow pace was kept. only 20 minutes. followed by strict instructions of ice and elevation straight after. no pain, just a slightly 'funny' calf. and i've come to the conclusion that because i've missed the first 24hr race of the year, i should probably enter the last one of the season. hello new 'old life'.

...now, if i could just finish this ucas form...

hobnail crutches

off to the sports physio this afternoon. our car is 'iced in' and it's a half mile walk to the bus stop. but after jane's success last night i've no excuses.

and amazingly i didn't hammer a tac into my fingers or screw anything into my leg.

06 January 2010

the view from the other sofa

...yes we have two sofa's...this one's much more positive though and less self pitying. the bulbous limb is becoming less swollen. i have never been so pleased to see my varicose veins again. the routine of wrapping up in down and turning the fire on whilst applying an ice pack is seeming less perverse and more normal.

the last few days have seen me turn from green eyed, snow fun envy monster, to police procedural sofa queen. it's just a fat leg and i will get better. and i will still run in the west highland way race.

enjoy your snow days.

wk6 'the plan' round up

aka the view from the sofa.

fat leg less fat and more just a bit lame. definitely on the mend but i've been 'signed off' for the week. so another week of nothing then (hopefully) ease back into training. however, i have been told by three separate medical professionals that it'll be six weeks before i can run.

which i guess means no strathpuffer. riding/pushing a bike round snowy hills in north scotland for 24 hours will probably not help get back to 'the plan'. gutted. this wasn't an event that i've particularly trained for (when do i ever do that!) but last year was a blast and i feel like there's unfinished business. but this year is all about the west highland way race....there's always next year for 'puffer.

going to contact a sports physio tomorrow...maybe they will say something different...
