it's been four weeks since the whw and i miss it already. and before you say "i told you so," i'm still not going to do it again....well not next year anyway (but it's now, an itch that will have to be scratched). i miss the the idea of a big challenge, but not the way the whw seemed to paralyze me into inactivity.
i've had a good ol' think about what makes for a good day out and the kind of challenges that leaving me wanting more. the conclusion, it's got to involve big hills and possibly sometime trying to sleep under the stars. with next year being taken up with going back to skool a series of mini adventures are being planned. also, there's been a distinct lack of cakes in recent months.
life after west highland way. no structure, no training, no logic. just doing some stuff to make me smile, whilst wiping the cake crumbs from my face.

Hi Kate
West is best! You can still find places over this side of town that are reasonably priced; I live in a little house in Nether Green which is a nice and not too pricey area (a cheap bit sitting in the middle of posh bits!), it sits on the Porter Valley which is basically a corridor into the Peaks. Close to uni. Other resonably priced Western areas are; Broomhill (great little sub-community, good shops and pubs, large student contingent), Crookes (similar to Broomhill), and Walkley (again, similar kind of thing). All also very close to the uni. All have excellent public transport and easy access out into the PD. High Storrs, Greystones and Hunters Bar are all nice too and situated near the 'famous' Ecclesall Road, but prices can be a bit higher on that stretch as a result. Avoid Ecclesall, Ranmoor, Fulwood, Bents Green - very very expensive.
I'm going on a bit here. If you want a bit more info then my email address is si@portervalleyplodders.com - let me know and I can go into a bit more detail!
If you are both heading to Sheffield, any chance of a run out with the Porter Valley Plodders?! Wally and Barry (the shoes) are always looking for new running buddies!!
Simon
ps, by saying, uni, I meant hospital, as they are next to each other.
Maybe more sensible (say easy to achieve) goals for now ...?
Distinct lack of cake here, too. Trying to live gluten-free ... have you got any good gluten-free recipes?
simon- cheers! would love to meet up for a run too :) many thanks.
groover- not too sensible i hope ;) have a look here for a lovely bakewell tart recipe
a belp, a wedgie, and a bgr in two halves..but no c2c :(
That's an impressive list of mini adventures. And should you want, I'll be on hand in a Scottish carpark with tepid pot-noodle and baby-bel surprises when you decide to scratch at that WHW itch again.
Good plan leaving it for now. But you'll be back and it'll be great. For now tho, mini adventures it is and damn good fun they'll be too!!
Nice list of mini adventures. Not sure if your definition of mini is right may need to check dictionary. I was thinking about the Welsh ultras and I see if you do 2 you get the 3rd one free - bargin maybe. Thanks for donation.
uc- i know, some day. i just don't have the time/leave left to do it. hmmm, maybe i could try and do it in a few days. a seed has been sown!!
jumbly- why thank you... not if you want a go first!
lesleyh- once i'm a grown up ultra runner then maybe ;)
ben- it's a good cause and looks like a good day out. maybe see you for some welsh ultras then :)
i'd say 5 ie 40 x 5. bingo.
uc- ok, it's added!! looks like it might have to be a winter. 'on-site' crossing though. can i borrow charlie ;)
Excellent list of mini adventures. Mary Townley loop is fantastic fun - lots of different riding in just one day!
just need to get out there now! might you fancy another go at mtl?
well you wouldn't need a map then
uc- does that mean you're going to come and navigate round the mtl for me ;)
I'd be up for the MTL again for sure. Drop me an email if you need a guide - after Trans Wales please! ;)
vdubber- september it is then! hope the training's going well :)
September sounds good! Training is a little time consuming to say the least, but OK :)
