the view from the other sofa

...yes we have two sofa's...this one's much more positive though and less self pitying. the bulbous limb is becoming less swollen. i have never been so pleased to see my varicose veins again. the routine of wrapping up in down and turning the fire on whilst applying an ice pack is seeming less perverse and more normal.

the last few days have seen me turn from green eyed, snow fun envy monster, to police procedural sofa queen. it's just a fat leg and i will get better. and i will still run in the west highland way race.

enjoy your snow days.

Having taken a break from t'internet I'm a bit late to the party in wishing you a full and speedy recovery :( But I will anyway :)

Sounds like you are winning the mental battle though, which, as in many things in life, is usually the hardest one :)

First year I did it Kate (2006) I didn't get my acceptance until January so there is more than enough time. Your time on the sofa should allow you to make alterations to those plans that you had, find the races that are going to put you in the right shape at the right time (Wuthering Hike?).

When it comes to the WHW Race. The physical struggle is nasty but it is nothing like the mental one. Use the down time to train your mind.

You could also spend the time making fruit scones or perfecting your curry recipe? Just a thought.

If none of those suit there is always alcohol.

what is the deal with that leg? every time i look at it, it's less pleasant and it's not even my leg!
the professional in me is curious...

ian- not as pleased as jane is!

emma- i'm so glad it's only me hauled up in the house ;)

shelly- cheers! glad to have you back, happy new year :)

mark- i'm doing mental push ups as we speak and maybe there will be some baking later, mmm...

swiss- you wouldn't believe a bloody bruise could cause so much damage! to cut a long and boring story short-fell of bike, hit shin. hurt a bit. then went for a run (14m). then leg swelled and became increasingly painful. not broken, just really bruised!!! shin still occasionally feels like boiling water is being poured down it. so, i'm now sat on my ass and no 'puffer. will let know as soon as i hear :)

i came off into a tree stump last year - so sore i thought i'd broken my femur! it took weeks to subside. i used a lot of arnica. usually i'm skeptical about such stuff but i think it did make some difference. that and my physio fiddling about with it.

the folk at work were supportive. i couldn't walk properly at all, couldn't use much of that side of my body. look at you they squealed, you look like you've had a stroke. and rolled about laughing.

the joys!

get well soon Kate! as DQ says you've loads of time for whw. you've done lots of long stuff so its not like you're starting from scratch, i didn't start training one year until April because of an injury, just relax and make sure you don't start training too soon!
great jelly baby pics, they're making me hungry...

Sounds a much better sofa. But you live in an odd house, no way would jelly babies be able to make an escape for freedom from here!

kate said...

swiss- ouch! yeh, my work colleges are equally sympathetic. i work on an orthopedic ward!

red- ice tyre fail?

ritchie- thanks, yours and mark's words are helping me be a little less 'stressed'

trio- yeh, the view's great from over here ;) j wanted to know how the jelly babies got outside...

As I said in my house - if they are lucky enough to get to the house - they would never escape on my own!

Arnica! Swiss is bang on the money there. Rub it in! Can you make a cake from it?

You have plenty of time for the WHW, you won't lose any fitness gains that quickly anyroad. This little layup may even act as a training boost for when you get back to the high mileage.

Kate: My ice tyres have fallen apart and they have been posted back for a refund. However, i've found that cyclo-x tyres aren't a bad alternative. I've got mild frost nip on my ears. As I can't stand getting my ears cold i'm stuck indoors.

g'day Kate - bummer bout your leg!!! Don't worry - you'll bounce back stronger than ever - have a go at aqua running - boring as hell but great to keep the fitness up - one day us girls will learn not to insist on running on an injury cause we can't bear missing out!!! ;-)

kate said...

iain- thanks for the tip. it's good to hear from experience people that 'fitness won't lost'.

red- ouch! frost nip is really painful. look after yourself :)

sarah- will probably give it a try this weekend. can't be more boring than the sofa!

Glad to see all the swellings going down - I smashed my elbow up last year - one bump to the elbow (well, one landing from a mid-air somersault off the bike) and the back of my whole forearm when black followed by an interesting purple and green-tinged array of colours - was sore for weeks and had a satsuma-sized lump sticking out - mind you - at least the worst problem I had was that I couldn't prop my head up on the desk the way I usually do. Don't rush it along though - give it time to sort itself out.

starfish- thanks. i'm enjoying the ever changing colours. you should probably work on your core stability though, if you can only use on arm to prop your head up ;)
